As We have been examining diversity I feel the majority of the Class has looked at diversity through the lens of accepting and celebrating differences. I think finding commonality is important, but modern times has really highlighted the issue of people participating in echo chambers where only commonality is important. As a result I think the differences should be the focus when it comes to celebrating diversity. It gives us the chance to question our own beliefs. This said I do wonder if we would find more progress in presenting diversity from the shared commonalities. I myself tend to think about how I am different from others. I think of my identifying characteristics Christian, liberal, graduate student, and recovered alcoholic as traits that are my own and aren't shared with those around me. I often see these traits as incredibly important to who I am and while I don't expect all to see eye to eye with why these traits are important I always am prepared to present them to people and defend why they are important to me. Identifying as Christian and as a Liberal I often find myself trying to bridge two identifying factors that people see as diametrically opposed to one another. I try to use these opportunities to express why I think diversity in thought is important. It has made me really invested in having rationals to convey my choices so that I can express myself clearly and logically. despite this I'm not always able to win over an audience but I find in 1 on 1 conversations I can at least reach an understanding with others.
